The Dutch-Caribbean island group just outside Venezuela’s coast, so called ABC islands, consists of Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao. The wind season here lasts almost all year but peaks in the summer months. As with the rest of the Caribbean it’s mainly light wind kiting that’s up on offer by the steady trade winds, although days with 25+ knots do exist. These conditions mixed with flat water and waves make it perfect for practising your new tricks while enjoying a rich night life and beautiful surroundings. All this perfection comes with a price though, so not a destination for the kiter restricted by budget.

Adelaide is normally not what comes to mind at first when you think Australian kitesurf. But as with most coastline around the world, unless it’s in the doldrums, you’ll get wind at some point. And if there’s wind, there’s kitesurfing possible.

Argentina’s flagship spot is Cuesta del Viento, a desert reservoir in the Andes foothills where a thermal wind fires nearly every afternoon in season. Flat water, big mountains, and a laid-back local scene.

Landlocked Austria kites on Lake Neusiedl, a vast steppe lake barely a metre deep — flat, forgiving, and quick to whip up in a breeze. Reliable thermals and frontal winds from spring to autumn.

Northern Europe lacks a distinct windy season, although many coastal spots enjoy a sea breeze on hot summer days. It can be windy all year around but sometimes be long periods with almost no wind at all, and it can be very cold during the winter months. From my personal experience, October to April are a lot windier than the summer months, but even then it’s a hit or miss gamble.

Belgium’s short North Sea coastline around De Haan and Ostend packs a dense kite scene onto wide, sandy tidal beaches. Best on frontal westerlies through spring and autumn.

A bit of a secret gem, Belize has two main kite spots, either on Caye Caulker or Ambergris Caye. The wind is good but there is a distinct lack of beaches for launching so this is mainly done from assisted boats. Once you get out on the water you can expect a beautiful experience cruising among shallow reefs and undisturbed wildlife.

Bermuda’s turquoise reef-ringed sounds and pink-sand beaches ride best on winter frontal winds, when the North Atlantic sends regular breeze across the island. Boutique-scale kiting in a mid-Atlantic setting.

Northern Brazil is the holy grail for most kitesurfers, with legendary spots like Paracuru, Cumbuco, Taiba and Jericoacoara. It has a long season with sunshine, warm water and smooth trade winds every day. The possibilities are endless around here, with conditions to suit all levels. Expect stronger winds up North, and earlier in the season. It’s no surprise that this is the most common training ground for the freestyle elite when they’re not on tour.

Brisbane is the capital of Queensland. A pleasant city on Australia’s West coast with a good quality of life to boast. The surf is good and the wind season is long. Furthermore you have Gold Coast in the South and Sunshine Coast in the North. With cities named like this, how can you go wrong!?

Cambodia’s main spot, Kampot, offers both a winter and a summer season, and shallow flat water in the river mouth of river Preaek Tuek Chhu. The wet summer season brings constant wind in the 15 to 25 knots range, gradually building up strength over the summer. The dry winter season provides varied wind conditions with off-shore wind ranging from 11 to 25+ knots. Add to that that Cambodia is cheap and still an undiscovered gem, and you might have found your next holiday destination.

The volcanic island group of the Canaries just outside Africa’s West coast is a Spanish overseas territory attracting thousands of European tourists every year. Each island has its particular feel, but for kitesurfing it’s mainly Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, and maybe Tenerife’s El Medano that will be of interest. Wave surfing is also decent with European standards. It is windy all year around on the Canary islands but for the most reliable winds and warm weather, aim for May to September.

Cape Verde (Cabo Verde) is a classic wave spot for surfers, windsurfers and kitesurfers alike. But you can also find flat water on this group of islands located near Africa’s West coast.

The Leeward islands is a part of the Caribbean, found between Puerto Rico in North and Dominica in South. Here you find homes to both kite loving serial entrepreneur Richard Branson on his Necker island, and wakestyle pioneer and Tona co-owner Andre Phillip on Antigua. Wind here is usually on the lighter side but consistency is good during the trade wind season. A trip to the West Indies would certainly benefit from some island hopping as you get to experience a variety of cultures, spots and local rums all within close proximity. The Windward islands are the more Southern islands continuing where the Leeward islands end, and together form the pearl belt of islands that closes off the Caribbean to the Atlantic Ocean. Each island has its own character influenced by its European roots, and you can find kite spots on most of them, from butter flat and secluded paradise spots in the Grenadines to all levels wave riding in Barbados. A trip to the West Indies would certainly benefit from some island hopping as you get to experience a variety of cultures, spots and local rums all within close proximity. The overseas British territory of Cayman islands. Famous for offshore bank accounts and giving name to a beautiful sports car. Not so famous for kitesurfing, although it does exist. Wind is on the light side so bring big kites.

Chile is facing the South Pacific Ocean and is occupying most of South America’s West coast, so it’s no surprise that this isn’t just a great wine country but also a great surf country. Now, you’ll have to be prepared to wear a wetsuit for most of the time but the wave spots are said to be of epic standards and you can also find the odd flat water spot. When tired of wave surfing, head over to Puclaro dam and ride fresh water with sunshine and consistent winds thanks to its own microclimate.

Hainan is a tropical island in the South of China, about 1 hour off the mainland coast. It’s not the windiest of places in S-E Asia but still offers decent 15 – 25 knots during the winter season. The summer season is less reliable with less days of wind although still rideable.

Kitesurfing in Colombia is still undiscovered and wild, but there are loads of spots to explore on the Caribbean-facing North coast. The wind is generally strong and consistent throughout the winter/spring season. For lake action, head to Calma lake near Cali where the wind blows all year.

Costa Rica is famous worldwide for its great wave spots. It also has a reliable windy season, so as a board sports enthusiasts you can pick and choose as you fancy. The more well-known kitesurf spots with the best kind stats are around Salinas bay up North, but you can also try the volcanic Lake Arenal for something different.

Croatia is famous for it’s rocky coastline and large archipelago. It’s gained massive popularity in Europe as a cheap and accessible place to spend the summer. There’s plenty of thermal wind in the summer, which maybe is more suitable for sailing given the few kite-friendly beaches around. There are however a few gems, of which the bay next to Neretva river mouth stands out as top class. For learners and freestylers alike, Neretva provides flat water and strong winds almost every day in the summer.

A lot could be said about Cuba and its kitesurfing scene. One thing is certain; people rarely complain after doing a kitesurf trip here! Kitesurfing is doable almost all year around, and even surfing is doable in the autumn. The best time to go for steady 12 – 15 knots Northerly wind is in the winter/spring. The tourism infrastructure around the kite-able North shores is well developed and you can expect resort hotels, flat water inside reefs and helpful and friendly locals. The more developed and established spots include Varadero, Cayo Coco and Cayo Guillermo.

Cuyo Island in the Philippines is a tide-dependent lagoon destination with shallow, butter-flat water suited to learning and freestyle.

Windy:

Cyprus is a great destination for waves, and offers good consistent wind in the summer months. Combine that with hot weather and good connection flights and you might’ve found your next holiday destination. There are many spots around the island so the best way to experience it is to rent a car and go exploring the coastline. Bear in mind that some beaches are closed off for kitesurfing in the summer.

Since the dawn of kiteboarding Dominican Republic’s Cabarete has been on the map as one of the classic spots. Wind is served all year around except for a rainy October, but for the best season aim for April to September.

Ecuador receives steady winds up to 25 knots during the windy season, and the main spot with schools and other amenities is Santa Marianita, not far from Manta. For kiting stick to the mainland though as Galapagos is off limits.

A trusted region for autumn and winter kitesurfing when all other kite destinations are too far away from Europe. Egypt’s Red Sea shores provide light wind and half decent probability in the winter, and a lot more of it in the summer, which is considered its main season. Temperatures are high all year around for both air and sea. The kitesurfing here can be world class for freestyle and learning with lots of sheltered lagoon spots.

East of New Caledonia and Vanuatu, in the South Pacific Ocean we find the paradise-like archipelago of over 300 islands that make up Fiji. Here you find decent wind all year around, but the best time to go is May through to October. Then there are less rainy days and the trade winds bring steady 15 – 25 knots with decent probability. On no-wind days the fishing and diving is world class, and there’s always surf – definitely world class. Fiji is a destination for wave surfers primarily, and should be on the bucket list together with Mauritius, Maui and Indonesia.

What’s not to like about Florida, especially for a kiteboarder? This sun drenched tip of North America’s East coast offers wind almost all year around, waves in places like Jupiter and flat water around the Keys just to name a few. If you’re planning a holiday to Miami, bring your kites and choose from a number of nearby spots.

Thanks to thermal winds you can find wind all year around but the best seasons are spring and autumn. South of France is good for both flat water spots and wave riding.

As remote as it gets, but also as scenic as it gets. Bang in the middle of the Pacific lies a cluster of islands scattered about like pearls. This is French Polynesia, an overseas collectivity of France. If luxury resorts, scuba diving and light wind kitesurfing is your type of holiday look no further.

Germany splits its riding between the flat, tide-free Baltic (Fehmarn, Rügen, Rostock) and the big tidal flats of the North Sea coast (Büsum, Cuxhaven, the East Frisian islands). Summer thermals plus shoulder-season lows keep the season long.

The Greek archipelago is a paradise in the summer months. If you’re looking for consistent, strong wind, sunshine as well as great food and culture, look no further. Each island has its own vibe and audience so do your research and decide whether you want to combine your kitesurf holiday with buzzing Euro trash night life in Rhodes, or the calm of Paros with only cicadas to disturb the silence in the night. Maybe even charter a boat and sail from island to island for a few weeks. Waves are not big enough to ride on most islands, but there are gems like Prasonisi, Rhodes that offer decent swell.

Get ready for lake riding! Guatemala’s main spots are the lakes of Lago de Atitlan and Lago de Amatitlan. As is common with lake riding you have to do a boat start, so these spots are better suited for riders who are happy to hook up with the local school for assistance. This matched with fairly light and stable thermal wind makes it a good place to learn kitesurfing.

The Gulf of Aqaba or Eilat is a great kitesurf region thanks to its dry climate generating strong wind most of the year. Head to Eilat in Israel, Aqaba in Jordan, or Dahab in Egypt.

Honduras mainland isn’t a place you want to go to for kitesurfing. However, not far from the Northern coast in the Caribbean you find the paradise-like Bay Islands, of Roatan and Guanaja.

South India’s kite scene centres on Rameshwaram and the Gulf of Mannar, where the summer monsoon funnels steady cross-shore wind over warm, flat lagoons. Budget-friendly, uncrowded, and remarkably consistent June–September.

Indonesia is most and foremost a surfer’s paradise. Kitesurfing is also possible here in their winter months which is also the dry period. When the trade winds kick in it’s not only about wave surfing; you can find great flat water spots inside the reefs all the way from Bali down to Rote.

Ireland’s Atlantic west coast — Belmullet, Achill and the Wild Atlantic Way — serves consistent swell and strong frontal winds over empty beaches. Cold water, big scenery, and some of Europe’s best storm riding.

Israel offers various wind conditions for kitesurfers all year around. The Mediterranean facing coast, including Tel Aviv and Haifa has a spring and an autumn season. Spring is lighter 15 – 20 knots, whereas the autumn storms bring stronger wind and big waves. The Sea of Galilee has thermal wind in the summer.

Italy’s best kitesurfing is arguably taking place in Sardinia and Sicily. But if you’re going to mainland Italy for other business and happen to be by the coast in the summer months, do take your kites with you. There are great kite beaches scattered around the coast, in particular in Tuscany and Lecce, Puglia. You can also ride the fresh water lakes of Como and Garda up North. The wind in Italy is thermal in the spring and summer, and powered by storm systems in the winter.

The Kenyan kite beaches offer similar conditions as Tanzania/Zanzibar, meaning light and stable trade winds, sunshine and relaxed vibes. Anecdotally you can expect a bit more wind here compared with Zanzibar during the winter season. Nyali and Diali beaches are popular destinations.

Kos is the Dodecanese's easy-access kite island: a long, flat north coast at Marmari and Mastichari catches the summer meltemi side-shore over sandy, waist-deep water, making it one of the friendliest progression spots in Greece. A short hop from the airport, plenty of schools and family-friendly resorts, and the option of flat-water day trips across to the Kohilari peninsula keep all levels busy.

The northern tip of Lake Como around Colico — the Alto Lario — is Lombardy's kitesurfing hub. The thermal Breva builds from the south almost every warm afternoon, funnelled between the mountains onto wide launch areas at Colico and Gera Lario, while mornings can bring the northerly Tivano. Flat water close to shore, alpine scenery, and easy access from Milan make it a favourite weekend spot with a well-developed school scene.

Windy:

Lake Garda is Europe's most reliable thermal-wind arena, framed by dramatic alpine cliffs at its northern end. The Peler blows strong from the north in the early morning and the Ora kicks in from the south every afternoon, giving two wind windows a day from spring to autumn. Torbole, Malcesine and Campione are the classic launch zones, with flat-to-choppy water, mandatory boat-assisted etiquette in places, and a huge sailing and mountain-sport culture on shore.

At 1,800 m in the Engadin valley, Lake Silvaplana is the birthplace of alpine kitesurfing and one of the most scenic spots anywhere. The thermal Maloja wind sweeps down the valley from the south-west almost every summer afternoon, hitting the lake with impressive reliability. The dedicated kite beach on the Silvaplana shore, glacier-fed turquoise water and 3,000 m peaks all around make it a bucket-list session — bring a wetsuit even in July.

Lefkada packs two very different kite zones onto one Ionian island: the vast shallow lagoon and sandy spit at Agios Ioannis / Milos beach near Lefkada town in the north, and the famous thermal amphitheatre of Vasiliki bay in the south. Reliable afternoon sea breezes, warm water from May to October, and an island you can drive across in an hour — connected to the mainland by a causeway, no ferry needed.

Klaipeda sits between the flat Curonian Lagoon and open Baltic beaches, giving both butter-flat freestyle water and small waves. Best May–September on sea breezes and passing fronts.

Spectacular in nature, wildlife and kitesurfing; Madagascar is something truly special. The wind comes with the cooler and drier winter period and stays into October. The wind is strong and blows almost every day during this period. If you need a day off kitesurfing there’s plenty of wildlife to discover so there’s no risk of getting bored.

Malaysia has a similar season to Thailand, with January as the peak month for steady wind. It’s a light-wind region with a lot of 12 knots days and a few 20+ knots days, so big kites or foil boards are to recommend. There’s also lots of swell available so it’s a good shout for wave surfers.

Mascarene islands is a group of island nations in the Indian Ocean consisting of Mauritius, Réunion and Rodrigues. They are all well suited for kitesurfing, however most people are probably mainly familiar with Mauritius.

Maui is one of the islands of Hawaii; the American holiday destination and surf paradise in the North Pacific. Everybody knows that Maui is the classic surf mecca, and thus focus is on wave riding. But this island suits all types of riders and offers a lot of varied conditions. Wind is served all year but best months are during the summer. Being the home of several kite brands, and pioneers of the sport one can imagine the local community is strong here. Read up on the local rules and be careful of car/beach theft.

Windy:

Everyone agrees that Ossie’s West coast is the place to be for the summer. This is where the best kitesurfing takes place on this continent. But if you happen to spend time in and around Melbourne, it definitely doesn’t have to mean kite down-time. The wind is not super reliable but you can get varied riding, and St Kilda is right in town. Just don’t forget your wetsuit.

Baja California Sur is a Mexican state and peninsula separating the Pacific Ocean from the Gulf of California. It’s a relaxed place for kitesurfers of all levels, with La Ventana and Los Barriles as the main spots. The season is fairly long over the winter and can sometimes carry all the way into the spring months. Wind can vary a lot in strength so bring the whole quiver. There are also a variety of top class surf spots, mainly on the Pacific side, if you want to mix things up a bit.

The Yucatan peninsula, famous for Mayan ruins, spring break parties and dolphin swims also boasts great wind stats and a plethora of spots for kitesurfers. Wind is usually on the lighter side so bring big kites.

A hidden gem in the Adriatic sea, Montenegro is gaining more and more popularity as a tourist destination. As a kitesurfing destination it offers only one spot really, but this happens to be a long stretch of sandy beach so the risk of getting crowded is small.

When we think Morocco and kitesurfing we think Dakhla, the unique dessert lagoon surrounded by kite centres. Now some airlines are even doing direct flights to Dakhla without having to transit in Casablanca. But there’s also Essaouira, which just like Dakhla offers both flat water and wave riding. The season is long and the wind is strong. Even in the winter you can find wind, and good waves in particular – you can’t go wrong with Morocco.

Vilankulo fronts the Bazaruto Archipelago: warm, shallow, flat water inside the sandbanks and wave spots on the ocean side. Southerly trade winds blow strongest May–September in an unspoiled African beach-town setting.

Not your normal run-of-the-mill kitesurf holiday destination. Namibia is for the adventurers out there looking for secluded beaches only accessed by 4×4 vehicles, far away from civilisation. They’ll be rewarded by untouched wave spots and lagoons, only populated by the rich wild life. Although the air will warm you up, the water is on the cooler side, so a wetsuit is still needed.

Windy:

The Dutch North Sea coast is one lined-up kite beach after another — Zandvoort, Wijk aan Zee, IJmuiden — with shallow Zeeland deltas and lagoons inland. Wind is frequent year-round, peaking with spring and autumn frontal systems.

New Caledonia is not well known to most of us, due to its remote location and French speaking community. It’s however a top class kiteboarding location with ideal conditions for the individuals persistent enough to travel the distance.

Lake Nicaragua, also know as Lago Cocibolca is the largest lake in Central America. It can be very windy and hosts a number of kite spots on its West shore.

North Carolina, and most noticeably Cape Hatteras and Outer Banks has to be counted amongst the top kitesurfing spots in the world. This is by far the best region on the US East coast to get your fix, almost any time of the year. Vast waist deep areas with flat water are mixed with wave spots and everything between and in the summer no wetsuit is needed. Most months deliver over 20 rideable days, but avoid the winter months if the cold doesn’t attract.

Fjord-and-island riding under dramatic peaks, from Ålesund to the beaches of Lofoten above the Arctic Circle. Cold water and changeable wind, rewarded with midnight-sun sessions and scenery few kite trips can match.

The Arabian desert nation of Oman faces both Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea, both of which are good for kitesurfing. The spots facing Gulf of Oman have similar conditions as the Persian Gulf and mainly light wind, whereas the Arabian Sea-facing spots, most noticeably Masirah Island can experience stronger winds in the summer. The stronger winds also cools the air which would otherwise be too hot for any type of outdoor sports.

Kitesurfing in Panama primarily takes place on the Pacific coast, which includes Punta Chame and the infamous Nitro City action sports resort and their seemingly kite-friendly pools. Apart from that Panama offers great wave surfing possibilities for all levels, and their wind and dry season aligns with our winter for the perfect escape from the cold.

Facing each other across a narrow Cyclades channel, Paros and Naxos are Greece's meltemi heartland. The channel acts as a venturi that accelerates the summer northerlies, serving Pounda on Paros and Mikri Vigla on Naxos with nuking side-shore wind day after day in July and August. Flat-to-choppy turquoise water, sandy launches, a big international school scene and classic whitewashed-island life ashore round out the package.

The Persian Gulf sees light wind all year around with roughly 10 – 20 days of wind per month. Bring your big kites and aim for spring (March – May) or autumn (September – November) for slightly better wind stats. Also be aware that their summer can be very hot and not ideal for outdoor sports.

The Philippines is a great winter destination for kitesurfing. It’s cheap, warm in both water and air, and most importantly benefits from the very reliable trade winds. Add to that that the Filipinos speak fluent English and are a very friendly bunch and you have a foolproof concept. The most famous spot in the Philippines is the paradise island Boracay, where kitesurfing is mixed with all-night-long parties, scuba diving and everything else in-between. But the best way to experience the Philippines is to explore the plethora of islands and secluded kite spots on a chartered yacht.

The Hel Peninsula — Chałupy above all — shelters a huge, waist-deep, flat-water lagoon that is one of Europe’s great learning venues. Summer thermals, a lively camp scene, and Baltic waves on the outside when it blows.

Puerto Rico offers year-round tropical trade winds and warm water, with kiting around the Arecibo coast and other island launches.

Sardinia is a great destination for kitesurfers of all levels craving flat water spots, consistent wind and warm weather. Wind can be found all year around but as with most spots around the Meds, the winter is less consistent in its wind delivery. You can visit great spots all over the island, including always windy Porto Pollo in the North, and butter flat Punta Trettu in the South.
