The kitesurfing directory for spots, schools & shops

Northern Brazil is the holy grail for most kitesurfers, with legendary spots like Paracuru, Cumbuco, Taiba and Jericoacoara. It has a long season with sunshine, warm water and smooth trade winds every day. The possibilities are endless around here, with conditions to suit all levels. Expect stronger winds up North, and earlier in the season. It’s no surprise that this is the most common training ground for the freestyle elite when they’re not on tour.

Windy: Nov – Mar

North Carolina, and most noticeably Cape Hatteras and Outer Banks has to be counted amongst the top kitesurfing spots in the world. This is by far the best region on the US East coast to get your fix, almost any time of the year. Vast waist deep areas with flat water are mixed with wave spots and everything between and in the summer no wetsuit is needed. Most months deliver over 20 rideable days, but avoid the winter months if the cold doesn’t attract.

Windy: Year-round

Thanks to thermal winds you can find wind all year around but the best seasons are spring and autumn. South of France is good for both flat water spots and wave riding.

Windy:

Northern Europe lacks a distinct windy season, although many coastal spots enjoy a sea breeze on hot summer days. It can be windy all year around but sometimes be long periods with almost no wind at all, and it can be very cold during the winter months. From my personal experience, October to April are a lot windier than the summer months, but even then it’s a hit or miss gamble.

Windy: Year-round

The Dutch-Caribbean island group just outside Venezuela’s coast, so called ABC islands, consists of Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao. The wind season here lasts almost all year but peaks in the summer months. As with the rest of the Caribbean it’s mainly light wind kiting that’s up on offer by the steady trade winds, although days with 25+ knots do exist. These conditions mixed with flat water and waves make it perfect for practising your new tricks while enjoying a rich night life and beautiful surroundings. All this perfection comes with a price though, so not a destination for the kiter restricted by budget.

Windy:

Brisbane is the capital of Queensland. A pleasant city on Australia’s West coast with a good quality of life to boast. The surf is good and the wind season is long. Furthermore you have Gold Coast in the South and Sunshine Coast in the North. With cities named like this, how can you go wrong!?
